Signs You May Need Root Canal Treatment
Pulp infections don’t always look or feel the same. Some patients arrive with sharp pain; others notice a dull ache that’s been building for weeks. Several signs suggest the pulp inside a tooth may be damaged or infected:
- Persistent or throbbing pain when biting or chewing, particularly if it doesn’t ease between meals
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold that stays well after the food or drink is gone
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a specific tooth, including a recurring bump on the gum line
- Tooth discoloration where a single tooth darkens compared to those around it, which can indicate the internal nerve tissue has died
These symptoms don’t confirm a root canal is needed, but they do mean the tooth should be examined. Catching an infection early gives us more to work with.
What Happens During Treatment at Our Practice
Our dentists begin by numbing the area thoroughly. For injections, we use the “wand,” a single-tooth anesthesia system that delivers small drops of anesthetic alongside a numbing gel. This approach can reduce the discomfort of the injection itself, which is often what patients dread most.
Once the tooth is numb, we access the pulp chamber, clean out the infected nerve tissue, shape the root canals, and fill them to help prevent reinfection. The natural tooth stays in place. Because a treated tooth tends to become more brittle over time, we typically recommend placing a dental crown over it afterward. Our crowns are custom-colored to match your surrounding teeth.
Sedation Options for Anxious Patients
Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people delay care for a painful tooth. We don’t think fear should stand between a patient and a tooth they may be able to save. Dr. Trent M. Collett completed two years of residency training in sedation dentistry, and we offer two sedation options for patients who want more than local anesthesia alone.
- Oral sedation uses anxiolytic medication taken before your appointment to produce a relaxed, calm state during treatment
- IV sedation delivers fast-acting medication through intravenous access, creating a “twilight” state appropriate for longer or more involved appointments
