Tooth Extractions in Buckhead

In-Office Evaluation & Treatment When a Tooth Can’t Be Saved

Severe decay, infection, persistent pain or swelling, or a broken tooth may mean it’s time to have the tooth evaluated for removal. Extraction isn’t always the only option, so we first determine whether the tooth can be restored and which treatment best fits your oral health.

During your evaluation, we assess the tooth, surrounding bone and gums, symptoms, medical history, and available imaging. We’ll also discuss whether the tooth may need to be replaced and how that possibility could affect treatment planning.

Schedule a free consultation or call (404) 491-7711 if you have tooth pain, swelling, dental trauma, or a recommended extraction.

In-Office Oral Surgery With Gentle, Patient-Centered Care

When removal is appropriate, Dr. Collett’s additional training allows us to perform oral surgery procedures in our office. You can receive diagnosis, comfort planning, treatment, and recovery guidance through the same practice.

At Premier Dental Care of Buckhead, we’ve provided dental care to the Atlanta community for more than 45 years. Our approach is gentle, detail-oriented, and patient-centered. We take time to explain the recommendation and what to expect so you can make an informed treatment decision.

What Happens Before & During a Tooth Extraction

Before treatment, we review digital dental imaging and 3D imaging as appropriate, explain the recommended procedure, and discuss what to expect during and after your appointment. Your treatment plan depends on the tooth’s position and condition, your medical history, and any restorative options under consideration.

The extraction approach may include:

  • Simple extraction: A visible tooth is numbed and removed from its socket.
  • Surgical extraction: Additional access may be needed when a tooth is broken, impacted, partially erupted, or below the gumline.

Wisdom teeth sometimes require surgical removal, but extractions may also be recommended for other teeth that are infected, damaged, crowded, or unable to be predictably restored. We’ll determine the appropriate approach after an examination and imaging.

Planning for Comfort & IV Sedation

Comfort planning is based on the procedure, your medical history, and your individual needs. IV sedation is available when it’s part of your treatment plan and considered appropriate after a medical-history review.

Before proceeding, we explain the procedure, available comfort measures, and anticipated recovery. You’ll also have time to raise concerns and ask questions.

How to Care for the Extraction Site

After oral surgery, we provide written and verbal instructions explaining how to manage bleeding and swelling, what to eat, how to clean your mouth, and how to protect the blood clot at the extraction site. We’ll also discuss physical activity, follow-up care, and when to contact our office.

Healing varies based on the procedure, the tooth’s location, and your overall health. Follow your individual instructions and contact us promptly if you experience worsening swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or any other concerning change.

Planning Ahead for Bone Preservation & Tooth Replacement

If you plan to replace the removed tooth, discuss that goal before the extraction. The tooth’s location, available bone, gum health, bite, and your preferences may affect whether a dental implant, bridge, or another restorative option is considered. This discussion can also help determine whether steps should be taken to preserve the site.

Dr. Collett may perform bone grafting to help preserve the extraction site for future implant treatment. We also use platelet-rich fibrin, a material prepared from a patient’s own blood, in some surgical and grafting procedures. We review graft materials and treatment timing during the consultation because these options aren’t appropriate for every patient.
